Monsters and madmen and murderers, oh my!

A club of serial killers calling themselves Oz is stalking the streets of London. Alone and desperate, 17-year-old Halo finds herself drawn into the middle of their blood-soaked storm of murders. Struggling to survive, Halo must contend with both known and unknown killers, put her trust in the most unlikely of devilish places, and play by a new set of rules if she is to become the Assassin of Oz.

Gavin, a young US homicide detective, has moved to the UK to catch the serial killers, Tin Man, Lion, Scarecrow, and The Munchkin Masher but soon finds himself two steps behind the headline-grabbing murderers and one step behind vigilante group, Wonderland.

Stalked by death and danger, both Halo and Gavin are going to need all the brains, heart, and courage they can muster to take down Oz.

The Assassin of Oz by Nicky Peacock
(The Twisted and the Brave, #2)

The Assassin of Oz (The Twisted and the Brave Book 2)When her mother left her with her drug pushing step-father, Halo’s life was far from perfect, but the man did keep a roof over her head, even if he did use her for a punching bag. It wouldn’t be long before she could run free and far away, but that all changed the night he tried to kill her and the strange man in white showed up to make her an offer she was too terrified to refuse.

Welcome to a dark and deadly version of Oz, an “exclusive” underground club where murder was on the agenda and twisted killers took on names from the beloved classic tale. To fail with an assignment made these twisted creatures a target themselves and London would never be the same as these serial killers managed to stay two steps ahead of the police, even with International help.

Halo’s first assignment just didn’t seem right, but her failure to perform would find her given a second chance at life, and the term “the Devil made me do it,” would take on a very personal meaning for her. Young Halo is about to discover that all is not as it seems and with Toto at her side, she may be the best friend a police detective ever had.

THE ASSASSIN OF OZ by Nicky Peacock is definitely NOT as magical as the story L. Frank Baum created. You think the Wicked Witch was deviously evil? The “man behind the curtain” may not have quite so quirky, either. This time out he is a sick and twisted ringleader who enjoyed tales of blood, and suffering and death. Dark, with some twisted gore, this murderous world is a unique take on the dangers of the streets of London and brings two fantasy tales together in a clash of good versus evil, serial killers versus vigilante justice with one teen caught in the middle, the devil on her shoulder and the law close behind.

She curses like a sailor (though, she used to be one, so she uses that as an excuse) and finds that many people don’t know how to handle that. She loves to read, and before finally sitting to try her hand at writing, she had your normal kind of work history. From tattoo parlors, to the U.S. Navy, and freelance illustration, she’s stumbled through her adult years and somehow, is still kicking.

During the afternoon fantasy parade, a dragon swooped down and carried off my boyfriend. I am not making this up.

So begins Leah’s adventures that lead her to another world. At home in California, Leah’s boyfriend Gerry is her rock and motivation. Now, trapped in another world without him, she must find her own courage. During her quest, Leah impersonates a missing princess, learns magic, and meets new friends and allies, including the shy, handsome Tolliver. But in the end, does she have what it takes to defeat Gerry’s fearsome captor, the Dragon Rider?

Rescuing the Prince by Meghann McVey

Rescuing the PrinceHidden Gem Alert! Fun Read Alert!

A contemporary California girl finds herself caught up in a real life fantasy when she witnesses her boyfriend being carried off by a dragon. Meghann McVey’s RESCUING THE PRINCE takes one girl into another world where she must impersonate a missing princess, learn magic, because, yes-it is real and find a way to free her missing boyfriend. But will Leah also discover that her boyfriend, Gerry may not be her true love after all? Why else would she find her heart fluttering for one of the Queen’s guards, Tolliver?

A great fantasy is always a fabulous way to escape for a few hours, but I found Leah to be an exceptional breath of fresh air! Why? Because she doesn’t “magically" become this missing princess who she resembles so greatly, she fumbles, she is lost, but she is also determined and driven. With only the help of the Queen and a few trusted guards, Leah will need to impersonate a less than “ordinary” princess, a princess who has a tendency to be more tomboy and who has willingly gone missing at a time when her people need her most.

Some fabulous twists, some unexpected turns and pure reading pleasure from start to finish, Meghann McVey ‘s RESCUING THE PRINCE is fast, fun, a little quirky and even has a mystery that unravels in a most unexpected fashion. Definitely a hidden gem that deserves to be a the top of fantasy readers’ lists!

Even a hard man needs a soft side.
Marko Sendoa isn’t a beach man. He’s not an Auckland man. He’s a hard man. Born Basque, raised in the heart of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, and bred on hard work, discipline, and getting the job done. It’s not easy for a rugby flanker to make it to age 32 at the top of his game, but he’s done it. Next year is the Rugby World Cup, and he’ll do whatever it takes to be on the field in the black jersey when the anthems are sung.
He doesn’t need a kitten.
He doesn’t need a pregnant cousin.
He definitely doesn’t need a too-short, distractingly curvy, totally unimpressed Maori barista and part-time pet portraitist who fills his house and his life with too much color, too much chaos, and too many secrets.
He’s getting them anyway.
EXCERPT:
Ahead of him, the girl looked tense. The running was new, probably. Felt too hard. That had to be it, considering the speed she was going. He caught up and said, “Excuse me.”
She whirled on him so fast, he started running backward out of habit.
“I have Mace!” she announced, all but baring her teeth.
Oh. She’d heard him coming up behind her. He blinked, realized he was still jogging backward, stopped, and said, “Uh . . . no, you don’t. But no worries. You don’t need it.” There wasn’t room to conceal more than a car key in that kit she was wearing. A flippy little zebra-print skirt, and a black sports bra that dipped low enough in front to show some cleavage. She was a curvy little thing and no mistake. Not that he was looking. She was advancing on him like the stroppiest terrier in the litter, and despite her aggression, he could see the fear underneath.
First the pub, and now this. He didn’t scare women. He was careful. He put up both palms and said again, “No worries.”
She seemed taken aback for an instant, but recovered fast. “I’m not worried,” she said. “But maybe you should be, eh.”
A hint of a Maori accent there. He considered explaining that he liked blondes, but she opened her hand, and bloody hell, but she did have a tiny metal canister laced between her fingers, together with her keys. An older couple was coming toward them with a Golden Retriever on a leash, and Marko had a sudden flash of his photo in another newspaper. Staggering around, tears streaming from his eyes, Maced on a bush track after attacking a jogger. That would be a good look.
Brilliant.

Offered a dangerous, long-shot chance to realize that dream, Caitlin will gamble with more than just her life.

By leading a ragtag crew of miners on a perilous assignment to harvest an asteroid, Caitlin could earn a small fortune. More importantly, it would give her clearance to return to Earth.

But when an unexpected disaster strikes the mission, Caitlin is plunged into a race to save not only herself, but every human being on Earth.
Zero Limit by Jeremy K. Brown

Zero LimitThe last unknown, outer space! The last place humanity can taint with greed. Caitlin Taggert was a war hero, now working on the moon, mining. The pay is bad, the conditions are poor and the risk is high, but she lives for her daughter on earth and the hope she will be with her soon.

Caitlin and her team are made an offer they cannot refuse, an offer to risk it all for wealth and a chance to go back to Earth. One mining mission that was it, one illegal mining mission on an asteroid floating in space. One dangerous, illegal mining mission on an asteroid, what could go wrong? Wasn’t her team the best of the best? Now it is up to her to save herself, her crew and the world.

ZERO LIMIT by Jeremy K. Brown has moments of white-knuckle reading, moments of motherly angst, the slime of greed and that gut churning race against time and the impossible. It also has poor decisions, the consequences of those decisions and the weight of humanity hanging in the balance. As the clock ticks down, the tension ramps up and a plethora of characters get involved, some with political machinations, some with dollar signs dancing in their dreams, some re-hashing an old love gone bad…and where is Caitlin? Out of control in space, being chased by an asteroid thrown off course and the clock keeps ticking…

A quick read, perfect for space travel fans who enjoy that race against doom while clueless earth-bound powerhouses wring their hands!

The Hunger Games meets Romeo and Juliet in a stunning debut about a forbidden romance between a young activist and a government employee working for a corrupt bureau that controls the population by deciding who lives and who dies.

Roman Irvine is a disgruntled IT Technician for the Divinity Bureau, a government agency that uses random selection to decide who lives and who dies. In a world where overpopulation has led to pollution, a crippled economy, and a world in crisis, he has accepted the bureau’s activities as a necessity. That is until he meets April McIntyre.

April has every reason to be suspicious of Roman. He works for the Divinity Bureau, which sent her father to an early grave. However, he is also sweet and loyal, and unbeknownst to her, he saved her life. As Roman and April fall deeper in love, the deeper they are thrust into the politics of deciding who lives and who dies. Someone wants April dead. And the bureau’s process of random selection may not be so random after all.

The Divinity Bureau by Tessa Clare

The Divinity BureauAn unlikely love story in a dystopian world where THE DIVINITY BUREAU decides who shall live and who shall die. Once again, corruption in government has taken world overpopulation, under production and deadly pollution and turned it to its own advantage by selecting who can “live forever” and who has been elected to die. Meanwhile, the population blindly assumes everything is for their own good until a group of activists begin to create a groundswell of rebellion.

Roman works for the Divinity Bureau in IT. he see a computer screen all day long, names flow past, but they don’t register as humans until one name stands out, one name slated to die and he cannot fathom why. April is young, intelligent and the daughter of a political figure who was “elected” to die. She knows her father still had much to give the world. She knows there is more to the Divinity Bureau than meets the eye, she is one of the growing number of activists and rebels making themselves heard. For her, Roman could be "the enemy."

What Roman sees is the girl of his dreams, but she is mistrustful of a man who would work for such monsters. In a tale told through both Roman and April’s eyes, love will grow in a world that has grown cold and its leaders are not to be trusted. Witnessing Roman’s less than suave approach and April’s clear amusement with his bumbling nature, these two make a formidable team when they realize that, just maybe they can make a difference and just maybe no one has the right to play god with humanity. Meanwhile, their budding romance seems far removed from the nightmares of their reality, but someone has to change the world…

Tessa Clare has taken just a slice of a dystopian world filled with death and darkness and allowed some sunshine in with young love! Not only are we given food for thought, but we see that love can grow in the bleakest of times! I enjoyed this read from start to a finish because it didn’t start out as a “Rebel’s Cause” type read, it started out as a love story that grew with all of the human pitfalls we can relate to as well as characters that grew before our eyes!

Can Rory keep Amara safe while protecting his own heart? Can Amara trust Rory not to break hers even as the danger mounts, threatening to take them and their passion to a breaking point?
Collision Point (Brute Force, #1)Collision Point by Lora Leigh

I find that there is a fine balance between steam and story. When the steam takes over the story it becomes more of a skimming and not so much entertaining for me. Most times Leigh hits the mark with that balance but its off in Collision Point making the telling feel choppy.

The fiery Amara and the bad ass Riordian were a perfect match. They do make the pages sizzle. This a great read for those who like lots of sexual tension and smoking hot reads.

The Amendment Killer by Ronald S. Barak Review Tour

The Amendment Killer by Ronald S. Barak Tour Banner

The Amendment Killer

by Ronald S. Barak

on Tour February 1 - March 3, 2018

Synopsis:

The Amendment Killer by Ronald S. Barak

"WE HAVE YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER. HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO."

That's the text message Supreme Court Justice Arnold Hirschfeld receives as hearings commence in the U.S. Supreme Court to determine the fate of the 28th Amendment - enacted to criminalize abuse of power on the part of our political representatives.
In court to defend the amendment, retired U.S. District Court Judge Cyrus Brooks observes his old friend and law school classmate Hirschfeld acting strangely and dispatches veteran D.C. homicide detective Frank Lotello to find out why.
In the meantime, Hirschfeld's precocious and feisty 11-year-old diabetic granddaughter Cassie, brutally kidnapped to control her grandfather's swing vote upholding or invalidating the amendment, watches her insulin pump running dry and wonders which poses her greatest threat, the kidnappers or the clock. As Brooks is forced to choose between saving our nation or saving the girl.

My 5 Star Review

Imagine the terror of receiving a text saying a monster has your granddaughter. That is exactly what happened to a Supreme Court justice in the middle of a history making decision that could change politics in the United States. Does he follow the demands of the kidnapper and vote with his heart or does he vote with his conscience and morals reminding politicians they work FOR the people, to serve the people, not the other way around.

THE AMENDMENT KILLER by Ronald Barak is a political hotbed, brimming with suspense, incredibly well-developed characters and tension through the roof. In contemporary times when the integrity of every branch of the government is under constant scrutiny, one justice is under the gun to undermine all our country is based on. Mr. Barak has turned a legal thriller into a psychological nightmare that will make a direct hit into the hearts of parents and readers everywhere.

How far would you go to save someone you love? Would you betray all that you stand for, the people you serve? Brilliant writing, taut, riveting and addictive!

Editorial Reviews

"THE AMENDMENT KILLER is tense, timely, and terrific!"
-Lee Child, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of the Jack Reacher novels
"With an unparalleled sense of terror forewarned on the opening page, Ron Barak's THE AMENDMENT KILLER is a high-speed, tense political thriller about one of today's most fundamental issues, the integrity of our SupremeCourt."
- Andrew Gross, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The One Man
"THE AMENDMENT KILLER is a high concept, hybrid blend of a political, psychological and action thriller all rolled into a smooth, savory, and suspenseful mix. Ron Barak manages to channel the best of John Grisham, David Baldacci and even Steve Berry in this amazingly timely tale cast with a SupremeCourt backdrop. As prescient as it is thought-provoking and as much fun as it is factual, this is reading entertainment of the highest order. I'd be shocked if this book doesn't become a bestseller."
- Jon Land, USA Today bestselling author of Strong Light of Day
"From its electrifying opening line to its powerful conclusion, THE AMENDMENT KILLER is a ripped from tomorrow's headlines story of law and politics set against the backdrop of the Supreme Court. But more so, it's a story about the lengths we will go for the ones we love. Timely, fast-paced, and heartfelt, you'll mourn the turning of the last page. Ron Barak is a writer to watch."
- Anthony Franze, author of The Outsider

Chapter 1

Tuesday, May 6, 6:30 am

We have your granddaughter. Here’s what you need to do.
Thomas T. Thomas III reviewed the language. Again. He closed the phone without hitting send. Yet.
He stared through high-powered binoculars from atop the wooded knoll. As always, the girl hit one perfect shot after another.
Cassie Webber. Age 11. He’d been tailing her for three months. It seemed longer.
She was chaperoned everywhere she went. Two-a-day practices before and after school. Her dad drove her in the morning. He watched her empty bucket after bucket and then dropped her off at school. Her mom picked her up after school, ferried her back to the practice range, and brought her home after daughter and coach finished. Mom and daughter sometimes ran errands on the way, but always together. Even on the occasional weekend outing to the mall or the movies, the girl was constantly in the company of family or friends. Having someone hovering over me all day would have driven me batshit.
His childhood had been different. When Thomas was her age, he walked to school on his own. And he lived a lot farther away than the girl. His daddy had never let his driver chauffeur him around. Wasn’t about to spoil him. Spare the rod, spoil the child. Didn’t spoil me that way either.
He kept telling himself patience was the key. But his confidence was waning. And then, suddenly, he’d caught a break. The girl’s routine had changed.
She started walking the few blocks between school and practice on her own. Dad dropped her off at morning practice and Mom met her at afternoon practice instead of school. Only a ten minute walk each way, but that was all the opening he needed.
Everything was finally in place. He would be able to make amends. He would not let them down.
This time.
She completed her morning regimen, unaware of Thomas’s eyes trained on her from his tree-lined vantage point. No doubt about it, he thought to himself. She was incredibly good. Driven. Determined.
And pretty.
Very pretty.
He relieved himself, thinking about her. A long time . . . coming. Haha! As the girl disappeared into the locker room, he trekked back down the hill, and climbed into the passenger side of the van. He returned the binoculars to their case. He removed the cell from his pocket, and checked the pending text one more time.
Moments later, the girl emerged from the locker room, golf bag exchanged for the backpack over her shoulders. She ambled down the winding pathway, waved to the uniformed watchman standing next to the guardhouse, and crossed through the buzzing security gate. She headed off to school.
Without taking his eyes off her, Thomas barked at the man sitting next to him. “Go.”
Chapter 2

Tuesday, May 6, 7:00 am

Eloise Brooks stared at Cyrus and shook her head. After more than 50 years of marriage, she understood everything about him there was to understand. Still: “I take the time to make you a nice breakfast. The least you could do is eat it while it’s hot.”
She held the warm cup of tea in both hands. “And can’t you talk to me, Cyrus? Why do you treat me like I’m not here? Like I’m some kind of a potted plant.”
Cyrus moved the eggs around on his plate. Speared a bite of fruit, swallowed it, but showed no visible pleasure in it. “I’m eating. What do you want to talk about? You think the couple cut from Dancing With The Stars last night deserved to be sent packing?”
“Should have got the hook weeks ago. You dance better than he does. Even with your two left feet.”
He didn’t answer. She knew why. “What’re you thinking about? Esposito? Whether 50,000 is enough? Your two left feet?”
“All of the above.”
She gazed at him but said nothing. Notwithstanding his apparent disinterest in the plate of food in front of him, his appetite—and his imagination—were never-ending. He loved upbeat music and dancing. And sports. He couldn’t carry a tune or dance a lick. Except for an occasional round of golf, his sports these days were mostly played out in front of the television. But that didn’t stop him from daydreaming. He danced like Fred Astaire. He sang and played guitar and harmonica like Bob Dylan. He moved around a tennis court like Roger Federer.
However, Eloise knew his real passion in life was the law. He had enjoyed a distinguished legal career, first as a trial lawyer and then as a U.S. District Court judge. Now retired from the bench, writing and teaching, and occasionally trying a case that got his hackles up, when it came to the law, those who knew Cyrus Brooks knew he was second to none. Amazing how sometimes he exuded that—with confidence bordering on arrogance—but at other times did not. More so since Frank Lotello had been shot, and barely survived.
Brooks sat there fidgeting restlessly with the newspaper. Eloise reached over and put her hand on his. “You’ll be great, Cyrus. I need to walk Ryder and get dressed, so we can drive into Court together. Please make sure Maccabee’s dishes have enough water and dry cat snacks.”
Arguments in the case were scheduled to commence in barely two hours. The chance to appear before the United States Supreme Court was rare, even for Brooks, but to do it in a landmark case that could permanently change the U.S. political landscape was unparalleled.
When they were first married, Eloise often attended Cyrus’s court appearances, both to show her support and because the judicial process was new to her. Now long accustomed to Cyrus’s legal adventures, Eloise was a less frequent visitor to the courtroom. Given the importance o

Pounding music. Sculpted men. And a conspiracy that could cost far more than a few dollar bills . . .
HOT COP
Detective Blake Knight has been undercover before. But an assignment to bust a steroid ring running out of Dallas’s elite male strip club means his new cover will be nothing but his own taut muscles and oiled skin. It’s one thing for the tough, by-the-books agent to take down bad guys with his gun. Facing a rowdy crowd in only a G-string is another story . . . especially in front of his new boss, gorgeous, mysterious Reese Landon.
Her father’s club and shady business practices bring back terrible memories for Reese. But when he’s shot and goes into a coma, she vows to protect him the way he never did for her. That means keeping the police at a distance—especially sexy, driven Detective Knight. If she has to give him a cover job, it would be a crime not to put that glorious ass on stage. But no matter how good he looks in a Velcro uniform, she can’t trust him, or give into the undeniable heat between them. They’re both chasing the truth. And it might expose more than either wants to show . . .
EXCERPT:
“Look, lady. I’m not one of your pretty boys.” Blake cleared his throat and breathed in a steadying gulp of air. Too bad Reese’s scent filtered through as she glided around the desk, seducing his senses with the knowledge of how she smelled.
Clean. Like soap rather than fragrance. The intimate realization made him want to know what her hair smelled like too. Hell.
“No. But variety spices things up, don’t you think?” She leaned against the desk and cocked her head. “Take off your clothes.”
He stepped back and crossed his arms, shock rippling through him. After a moment, he managed to unclamp his jaw and say, “Not happening.” She pouted and made a noise that sounded more amused than sympathetic. “Too bad. I can’t “hire” you without an audition. So, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got work to do.”
His feet stuck to the floor as she brushed by him. Her hand landed on the doorknob before the truth hit him. She wanted him out of here and had no intention of letting him go undercover in the club. She’d made it impossible on purpose. To hell with that.
He could impose his will, but then he’d jeopardize any chance at building rapport with her, a critical tool of his undercover work.
He pulled his gun belt out of the back of his pants, placed it on the chair and whistled, making her head snap around. When her eyes fixed on him, he tugged his T-shirt from his jeans, lifting it slowly, inch by inch, the air conditioning making his abdominal muscles contract. When the tee reached shoulder height, he pulled it off and tossed it at her feet.
There. She wanted a show, and he’d give her one.
Reese sucked in her cheeks, her gasp filling him with pleasure, strong and tart. Had she thought he’d back down? She’d learn, soon enough, he didn’t run from challenges…ever.
At last her mouth closed, and she stepped closer, chin raised. “Not bad.
Why’d you stop?”
“Because you can’t handle seeing the rest. Trust me.”
One eyebrow arched, and she gave him a speculative stare. “Didn’t peg you for the shy type. Guess a job here won’t work out after all.”
His head jerked back. She wasn’t letting up on this little game. She believed if she pushed him hard enough, she’d get rid of him completely.
He set his jaw.
If she wanted more, he’d sure as hell give it to her.
His fingers fumbled with his belt before yanking it loose and dropping it to the floor. He hesitated a moment, his hands on his zipper.
Now or never.
He slid the iron teeth apart and turned on his heel, dropping his jeans and boxer briefs so they pooled at his feet. The air slid across his bare skin, her sharp intake of air the only sound in the room.
He planted his feet far apart to give her some bonus footage and peered at her over his shoulder.
“What’s the verdict?”
Her mouth worked silently, her eyes saucer-sized.
“Want me to turn around?” He bit back a chuckle, enjoying this sexy cat-and-mouse game.
“Hell, yeah,” she breathed.
